Pittsfield Short Track Championship
The Pittsfield Parks Speed Skating Club and the Pittsfield Winter Sports Committee Inc of the Pittsfield Parks Dept. will be holding the Pittsfield Short Track Skating Championship Saturday March 1, 2008 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Ice Rink in North Adams, MA. Check-in will be 10:00 to 11:00 AM and warm-ups will begin at noon. Registration deadline is Feb. 27. For registration materials and direction please click on the link below.

2008 Jck Shea Sprints
January 5th and 6th fourteen members of the Pittsfield Parks Speed Skating Club traveled to Lake Placid, NY to compete in the 2008 Jack Shea Sprints. Metric (Olympic Style) races held on 1980 Olympic Oval included a 2 day series of 500 m and 1000 m distances.
Skaters included MaryLou, John C., Ed, Paul, Art, Lee, Gabby, Annie, John M., Anna, Alice, Theresa, Christina and Lauren. Also in attendance was MaryLou’s husband Dick, Ed’s wife Pam, Christina’s parents Bill and Ann, the Murphy’s mom Joanne and Lauren’s dad Bill drove all the way from Pittsfield just for the day on Sunday to see Lauren skate. They were named “the loudest group” because they really know how to cheer on their skaters.
The weather was beautiful and the ice must have been fast because many members had PRs in both the 500 meter and 1000 meter distances. Several Pittsfield skaters also participated in the 5000 meter race at the end of the day Sunday. Once again, John Dimon put on a terrific race.

Speed Skating Cancelation
Sunday December 16 - Due to the bad weather there will be no speed skating tonight.
Learn-to-Skate Program Planned
The Pittsfield Parks Speed Skating Club in conjunction with the Department of Community Services, Parks and Recreation will conduct their annual Learn-to-Skate program beginning Wednesday, Dec. 26.
The program will run from Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 26th through 28th, from 11:45 to 12:45 at the Pittsfield Boys’ and Girls’ Club rink on Melville Street.
Skaters are required to wear helmets (bike helmits will do) and gloves; elbow and kneepads are also recommended. They should dress warmly but avoid loose, baggy clothes and long scarves. Skates will be available at no extra charge. No double runner skates are permitted and skaters must be at least 5 years of age.
Registration will be on Tuesdays Dec. 11 & 18 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and Sunday, Dec. 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the Pittsfield Boys’ and Girls’ Club rink. Registration materials are available at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club and on Pittsfield Parks Speed Skating Club web site www.pittsfieldspeedskating.org. Cost of the program is $25 for first child and $20 siblings ($50 family maximum charge).

2008 Season Begins !!
This Sunday (October 7th) is the first ice session for the Club. It has been a great Summer and hopefully everyone has been doing their training so we can meet the skating season full-on with great fitness and health. Skating begins at 7:30PM on Sunday and will run until 8:30PM; until 9PM for the adults. The Tuesday sessions will start the following Tuesday 6:10-7:10PM.

Hi Everyone,
The Pittsfield Speedskating Club and the Pittsfield Winter Sports Committee Inc of the Pittsfield Parks Dept. will be holding the Pittsfield Short Track Skating Championship Saturday March 3, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Ice Rink. I have attached registration materials . This is a big fund raising event for the club and we need everyone’s help to run the race. I will be at the Boys Club rink during the next couple of sessions with volunteer sign-up sheets. We also provide food for the officials (and ourselves) so there will also be a sign-up sheet for the food and goodies you wish to donate.

Lee Dickinson joins as club coach!
Lee Dickinson, a certified level I coach, from the Capital District Speedskating Club has offered his help with coaching. Lee will be attending both the Tuesday and Sunday sessions pending weather and travel conditions. It has been more than a long time since the Club has had formal coaching and I am very excited to watch everyone become faster and more technically adept as a result of Lee’s work.
